Re-connect your Portable SSD to the device running macOS system and execute the Samsung Portable SSD Software. If the problem continues, delete and re-install the Samsung Portable SSD Software. If the problem does not get resolved even after following the troubleshooting guidelines, please contact an authorized Samsung service center. Once you agree to the terms and conditions of the Samsung Portable SSD Software while it is being installed, you can set a password through the following steps. (Certain elements of Samsung Portable SSD Software will be installed on the user’s computer for password protection.).
After the recent update by Samsung, to access its portable TT5 SSD disk drive, the hard disk is not recognized by the Macbook machines anymore. Went through the channel apple link and tried different solutions. Being novice and not having good hands-on on Mac OS, I decided to jot done some steps to make it easier or helpful to others. Hope below steps would help.
Reason: Portable SSD software update vs IOs update compatibility issue.
Objective: Remove the installed software completely from Macbook. And, reinstall the old version of SSD Samsung software so that SSD can be recognized and password-protected data can be accessible again.
Guide:
A) Uninstalling App. Disconnect the SSD from the laptop.
- In the Terminal type:
- Keystroke: Command+Space
- Type: Terminal in Search panel (you can open a terminal in other ways too.)
- In the results, choose and open the terminal window. ( Top Hit: black window symbol normally )
- In the Terminal type:
(a) cd <enter>
(b) cd Library/Application Support/ PortableSSD <enter> . ( If path did not work press tab after each folder name)
5. Here you will find a file named “CleanupAll.scpt “.
6. Run this file: You can run this file by typing this command at the same location where the CleanupAll.scpt file exists: osascript CleanupAll.scpt <enter>
7. This will pop up a window for uninstallation Warning and password etc..continue… and the Samsung SSD will be uninstalled.
8. To verify can search the App in Finder. It should not appear and can also browse the previously installed folder.
9. NOTE: Do not connect your hard disk.
- In the Terminal type:
B) Installing the older version of the software:
1. Before installing please note DO NOT UPDATE V 1.6.
2. Getting software: Can write an email to Samsung help or support portal and get the software “portableSSD v 1.6” from the download link. Otherwise, you can get from here. ( I took this reference from other internet threads, it worked for me)
- ActivationSoftwareforMacOSver 1.6 (MULTI LANGUAGE): Mac OS 10.9 ~ 10.13
3. After downloading install the package it will take 1min approx. Done. All set.
Now you can reconnect the hard disk. Please do not update the software else it will revert the changes implemented in the above steps.
4. After you reconnect. Go to Applications folder ( Can use command + Space). Double click SSD icon to start recently installed older version. This will open the window like previously. If password protected it will ask you to enter the password. You may see some Warnings related to hard disk not viewable etc. ignore do not do anything. Also, it may warn something like the hard disk is: if used by another application etc.. ignore all.
5. Enter your password login. After Login you will see a warning message about the hard disk space not recognized ” Failed to check disk space or Failed to locate a volume” Again, please ignore.
6. On Desktop: Search the connected SSD: Maybe named like “Samsung_T5”. If you see icon not appear like a default SSD hard drive icon again do ignore. Double click on it. Maybe in the first attempt, it would not be visible or not recognized. Even, it may try to bring to update the SSD Window. DO NOT UPDATE. Wait for a few minutes and refresh the laptop. The hard drive will appear like usual display and now you can browse the disk.
7. I will suggest first take out the data backup of this disk, to avoid any issue in case of a future update.
Note 2: If after login to PortableSSD app, you cannot see the hard disk in Apple Browser menu (i.e. Favourite or Locations), do not worry leave the login screen for 5 min. and refresh the browser. It takes some time and will appear mounted on Desktop or in Location panel on left. Secondly, do not take out all the data immediately in one go transfer in part by part. The TTL5 hard drive failed to do mass storage transfer its hardware limitation. Its read-write speed drops below normal HDD when you do large data transfer, even may crash multiple time. (only from my experience)/
Anytime when you find PortableSSd app stop detecting SSD, do not plug and play multiple time you will risk damaging harddisk/ or losing data. Just update the app to latest version and uninstall again i.e. repeat the above steps.

How to Use a Samsung External SSD on PC
Usually, an external SSD can be used as an extended storage device or backup device. But for a new external SSD, you need to make some preparations before you can use it.
Preparations You Need to Make
Before using a new Samsung external SSD, you have to initialize it to MBR or GPT. It is recommended to use GPT style for your SSD if it is supported by your operating system, as GPT supports more than four primary partitions, and it’s better for the newer UEFI-based system.
To initialize your external SSD, you can use Disk Management, a built-in disk manager in Windows. The detailed steps are as follow.
Step 1: Connect your Samsung external SSD to PC with a cable.
Step 2: Press Win + R to invoke Run window.
Step 3: Type diskmgmt.msc in the box and press Enter to access Disk Management.
Step 4: As the disk is brand new, a window requiring you to initialize disk will pop up automatically. You just need to choose a partition style according to your needs and click OK. Here I select GPT.

Use the Samsung External SSD as a Backup Device
